Conceptual Photography
Kavan Cardoza is a creative based in Los Angeles, California. Over the years, his road has been built from valleys and peaks. His work is deeply personal shaped by the struggles he’s encountered along the way.
Creating art is therapy to Kavan.
“It’s the only way I know how to truly express myself and I get a great joy out of seeing how people respond to the work that is so deeply personal to me.
From having a visual connection to them, to how they take these pieces that are drenched in surrealism and create stories that relate most to them. We may all see the same visual but we are not all seeing the same story.”
1. Conceptualize
Think of the story you want to tell, so you know exactly what it is that you’re trying to convey to the audience with the image.
2. Sketch
Draw your concept into a notebook and begin brainstorming the colors you want to use, type of lighting, props, background etc. to best tell the story. Write down every detail you’re seeing in your mind, so you can plan the shoot accordingly.
3. Pre-Production
Kavan takes a film approach when planning, meaning that he spends time in pre-production leading up to the shoot. This includes tasks like gathering props and going to the location beforehand to scope out the lighting. The more in-depth the pre-production, the smoother the shoot will go.
4. The Shoot
If you’ve put in the time beforehand, this part should run smoothly. While shooting the image you’ve conceptualized, play around with different poses and angles.
5. Post-Processing
Begin post-processing the image in Photoshop. Build what the image is going to look like by placing everything in its appropriate place then play with the lighting and coloring to match the image.
“I think it’s important to realize all the other things that come with life because that’s what makes happiness that much better when you do have it.”
